چکیده

Richards, Lundqvist-Korf and Hossfeld growth functions were fi tted to age-height data of European chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) dominant trees on the northern slopes of Belasitsa mountain, Southwest Bulgaria. Th e model prediction performance was evaluated using quantitative as well as qualitative examinations. Goodness of fi t of each model was estimated by the coeffi cient of determination, F-test for signifi cance of the regression and t-tests for signifi cance of the coeffi cients of the model. Models were further compared by the evaluation of the standard error of the model and Akaike’s Information Criteria. Site index curves were constructed following the "guide curve method" procedure. In accordance with the evaluation tests, the Richards function was chosen as most adequate to express the age-dominant height relationship. Accordingly, it was further employed as a guide function to derive site index curves for studied chestnut population. It was recommended that the growth model and the site index curves elaborated in the current study are used within the data range 10−110 years.

Physico-chemical, rheological and antioxidant properties of sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) as affected by pan and microwave roasting

Sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) belongs to the family Fagaceae and sub family Castaneoideae. Bioactive components such as tannins are present in sweet chestnut in high proportion giving astringent bitter taste and reducing their palatability. Roasting reduces the anti-nutritional factors in chestnut. This study was conducted to compare the effects of pan and microwave roasting on physico...

Organic matter distribution and nutrient fluxes within a sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) stand of the Sierra de Gata, Spain

The aboveground biomass, litterfall and its accumulation, litter weight loss due to decomposition and nutrient pools in relation to soil properties were analyzed in a Castanea sativa Mill. stand in order to better understand the recycling of elements associated with the turnover of organic matter. The aboveground biomass and the nutrient content were estimated by harvesting eight trees. In orde...

Aerobiology of sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) in north-west Croatia.

The aims of the study were to analyse characteristics of the Castanea airborne pollen and to compare aeropalynological data obtained from two sampling stations in north-west Croatia. The study was conducted in Zagreb and Samobor during the 2003-2006 periods, using the seven-day volumetric samplers of the Hirst design. In both study areas, the seasons of chestnut pollination were similar and las...
